Throw Some Dirt On It!

When we’re children, the smallest of boo boo’s would get mom’s attention, kisses and a little bandaid. Even the boo boo that couldn’t be seen; since it was really your pride that got hurt. You know because you didn’t nail the bike jump or leap off the swing set like you planned while your friends were watching. No matter the boo boo, the comfort you got in that moment is what made it okay and got you back playing again. Something happens when we become adults, the falls and tumbles we take get bigger and seem to be more hurtful. At times there doesn’t seem to be a bandaid big enough to make it all better.

Do you remember falling down as a kid and in the midst of your pain, crying, and bloody knee someone saying to you, it’ll be alright just throw some dirt on it! I sure do and I’ve been known to say a time or two myself. Have you ever really thought about what that saying means? It doesn’t mean literally throw some dirt on the wound and go on. Although, in my softball days I did do that so that I could keep playing. What it means is to get up, stop complaining, and keep pushing forward.

So how do you do that when you’re in the midst of the storm, the hurt, uncertainty, pain, and it’s hard to understand why? When you feel angry, frustrated, confused or just unsure about what’s next? Well…. you allow yourself to feel all those things and you allow yourself to question the why. I think it’s even okay to have a little pity party. The most important thing is to not allow yourself to stay in the negative feelings and be consumed with all the questions. You have to get up, stop complaining and keep pushing forward – even when you don’t know what the next step is or how it’s going to workout. I was reminded of the importance of this recently as I’m finding myself about to face another surgery, Phillippians 4:6 gave me comfort in my moment of uncertainty. It says, ” Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God.” We have so much to be thankful for, even in the challenges. It’s in the challenges and the most difficult times in our lives that we learn, grow, and become stronger. It’s the process that we endure through the difficult time that provides wisdom, growth in faith and helps you face the next challenge with more strength and confidence. If you find yourself in trying times, feeling stuck or consumed with negative thoughts and questions, remember it’ll be alright, get up and throw some dirt on it!
